LBC Rides from the Past - June 2005

Oregon Dairy Jun 1
Another great night for ice cream. Could have been a slight bit warmer. Riders: Gary Musser (leader), Alan Hurlbut, Judy Hurlbut, Phil Wright, Linda Wright, John Cardos, Chuck Wissing and Stacy ?.

Two Lakes Loop (B) June 4
Besides myself only one hardy rider showed up on this drizzly, damp morning. This was the inaugural riding of the "Two Lakes Loop." No spills or mishaps to report. The only excitement was helping a turtle off the road. Riders: Damon Schlott (leader) and Curtis Palmer.

Brownstown-Akron-Farmersville (C) June 4
Rained out! Mike Gibson made an executive decision and we moved to the Oregon Dairy. Took an 11o'clock impromptu ride out of the Q. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), John Renard, John Mullineaux, Phil Wright, Dave Heck, and Dave Kessler.

East Pete Treat (D) June 4
As Harry had "house work" to do, Alan took his ride on a threatening day; however, the rains did stop just before the 4 of us took off and it turned out to be a rather nice morning for riding. In the process of departing from the Q-sheet we did the front end of this ride last and by altering some sections in the middle we managed to meet the Pedaller mileage of 20 instead of the Q-sheet's 15.4. Jim and Penny were on their first LBC ride of this year, on their new Cannondale bikes and did great, as they pushed the leader to average slightly over 12 mph for the ride. I believe everyone had a good time, at least the leader did. Riders: Alan Hurlbut (leader), Judy Hurlbut (sweep) and Jim and Penny Kulp.

Safe Harbor Ride (A) Jun 4
Roads were wet to start but not a drop of rain did we see. Had a somewhat cool, but humid ride at 16 mph. Riders: Rick Lehman (leader) and Scott Wagner.

Jigger Shop Jaunt (C) Jun 4
Despite threatening skies, we had a good ride and enjoyed ice cream and watching an outdoor wedding in Mt. Gretna. Riders: Lisa Greene (leader), Rachel Kreider, Henry Manning, Rich Williams, Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy, and Joe Sears.

Ride to Manheim (D) Jun 5
It was a warm Sunday afternoon with riders from different levels. The leader stayed with the second group averaging 12.8 mph. This was the leader's first lead. Helping one rider change a flat tire-his first ever during a ride. Riders: Phil Wright (leader), Harry Campbell, Deborah Chu, John Mullineaux, Karen Wisniewski, Jim Payton, Karen Drawbaugh, Cindy Snyder, Steve Holland, Kathy Smeltzer, Jim Wright (leader), Harry Campbell, Deborah Chu, John Mullineaux, Karen Wisniewski, Jim Payton, Karen Drawbaugh, Cindy Snyder, Steve Holland, Kathy Smeltzer, Jim Drumm, John Gantz, Ray Landis, Lew Hershey, Carl Kreider, Jill Baumgartner, Jill MacKenzie, Jim White, Jeff DeLong, Pearl DeLong, and Jonas Fisher.

Triple Play (A) June 5
It was the first hot day of the season. The ride goes around Rothsville, up three climbs, and back to Manheim. Some of the "A" riders were really flying. Riders: Kyle Awkerman (leader), Tim Norejko, Mark Buckwalter, Barry Lavender, Tom Hunt, Dale Burkholder, and Dan Newcomer.

Ephrata Dutch (long) (B) June 5
Twenty-three cyclists showed up for this first real summer's day ride. Your scribe knew at once that a group this size would quickly break into smaller groups and that he would assume his customary duty of leading from behind. This happened shortly after leaving the parking lot! Your leader and 7 others then did the ride at a comfortable pace while the rest were in various stages of oxygen debt.
Along the way, we came upon a fast guy who had obviously exceeded the speed rating for his tire and flatted. He was being helped by Tim Good (another fast guy) and needed no assistance from mere mortals like us. As we crossed Rt. 322, I mentioned to my group that this was the part of Northern Lancaster County that I was least familiar with. This was amply proven by my taking a wrong turn shortly thereafter, leading my group on a 2 mile diversion and shredding what little confidence they had in my leadership abilities. This coupled with an issue on the cue sheet, itself, proved rather dramatically to all that the leader should preview the ride before leading it. Nevertheless, with a second detour to the local cycling Mecca, Sheetz, we finally made it back to the start better for the effort. Riders: John Mullineaux (leader), Curtis Palmer, Tim Good, Steve Schmohl, Randy Haluck, Dave Kessler, Andy Charles, Cindy Davis, Steve Gerber, Rob Barber, Jerry Wisnosht, Craig Shreiner, Tom Rauba, Rich Wagner, Bob Colton, Matt London, Lew Hershey, Laura Paul, John Donati, Dirk Suereth, Scott Wagner, Bill Ressel, and Diane Lausman.

Ephrata Ramble (C) June 5
It was a nice day for a ride, even if only one person decided to show up. Kim said after the ride that it was not that bad (We did skip Ridge Avenue). People have often said that they like taking new rides and I don't remember that this ride has been done for quite some time. Thanks again Kim. Riders: Art Leid (leader) and Kim Lausch.

Coleman's Ice Cream Ride June 8
Sporadic afternoon thundershowers dampened the roads and the interest of many on this Wednesday afternoon. Six hungry cyclists came out anyway and were treated to cooler temperatures, dry roads, and great ice cream. Riders: Jerre & Judy Hockenbrocht (on tandem), Ellen & Everett Newswanger, John Cardos, and Andrew Mead (leader).

Turnpike Tour 2 Jun 11
Really hot humid morning. Group stayed together and averaged 19.5 mph. Riders: Scott Wagner (leader), Brian Mitchell, Tim Norejko, Tom Hunt, Craig Shreiner, Ed Fearnow, Rick Lehman, Ken Lessans, and Bret Levy.

The P&PRAEWMF Ride (B) Jun 11
Four riders joined the leader for this interesting ride. Try as we might, no reasonable name behind the acronym could be ascertained (at least none suitable for polite conversation). We faced the 3-H s even as we departed CV at 8 am and rolled along toward the county's eastern side. Those riders who tried the New Holland Reservoir ride a few weeks ago found out why turning up Reservoir Road is a better choice than continuing up Ranck Road. Dirk supplied the statistics: 1.1 miles of climbing, 7% average grade, 10% steepest ¼ mile, and 13% steepest point. These numbers are enough to place Ranck Road in the Top 10 Lancaster County bicycle climbs. Look for Dirk's report of the Lancaster County Top 10 soon. We pressed on, tackling more of the Lancaster County Top 10 on our way back. The group was strong, averaging slightly better than 16 mph on a hilly ride. The polka-dot jersey was awarded to Curtis for a tactically perfect "drop back, watch, and attack at the summit" maneuver. Riders: Andrew Mead (leader),.Dirk Suereth, Mark Kaufman, Tom Rauba, and Curtis Palmer.

Warwick Tour (C) Jun 11
Several new people on the ride. Teresa Ostrich, Jan Solkov, and Andy Kaufman (no not that Andy Kaufman!). Many were dreading Picnic Woods Road but the hill is overrated. Riders: Gary Musser (leader), John Cardos, Rich Wagner, Steve Schmohl, Teresa Ostrich, Randy Haluck, Mary Stadden, Jan Solkov, John Gantz, Marilyn Gelsinger, Roger Sheaffer, Dave Kessler, Rodney Moseman, and Tim Good.

Chickies Creek Long (D) Jun 11
Another wonderful day for riding. No flats, spills or lost riders, very enjoyable. Riders: Jim Payton (leader), Harry Campbell (sweep), Ray Landis, Phil Wright, Jim White, Don Lewis, Celeste Neuhard, John Peregoy, Eric Kleft (?), Penny Kulp, Jim Kulp, Dave Heck, Lesa Heck, Tom Mellinger, John Rohrkemper and non-LBC member Carl Smith.

Masonic Home Tour (A) Jun 12
Warm muggy morning. The ride quickly broke up into three groups. Ken arrived late and after a vain attempt to join the lead group he settled in with the middle riders. Tim N. attempted the ride without water which forced the second group to make a pit stop in E-town. The leader finished the ride with Jim and Jude at slightly less than the advertised pace. Riders: Dirk Suereth (leader), Tim Ihrig, Craig Shreiner, Jude Sharp, Mark Buckwalter, Jim Moss, Tim Norejko, Neil Fickes, Dale Burkholder, Barry Lavender, and Ken Lessans.

Buena Vista Long (B) Jun 12

Terre Hill Ride (C) Jun 12
We met Kay and Joe about five miles into the ride. We lost them at the New Holland Sheetz but they managed to find their way back. The rest of the merry band (with the exception of Matt) stayed together for most of the ride. Riders: Gary Musser (leader), John Mullineaux, Lew Hershey, Steve Schmohl, Mike Gibson, Ed Fearnow, Bobbi Fearnow, Matt London, John Gantz, Randy Haluck, Jim Bair, Joe Knepper and Kay Knepper.

Not D Manding (D) Jun 12
We decided to do Steve's ride instead of the planned ride. Riders: Steve Mentzer (leader), Lynn Mentzer (sweep), Carol Bowers, Jim Payton, John McKelvey, Michael Riggi, and Beth Hendrix.

Sundae at Caddy Shack (C) Jun 12
The road is closed that takes us to the Caddy Shack. To keep us off the main roads I decided to do the route in reverse. It worked out very well and even avoided the steepest hills on the route. It may be a permanent change. The shade and root beer floats were a welcome change in the middle of a ride on a hot, humid day. Riders: Rachel Kreider (leader), Carl Kreider (sweep), Doug Stark, Ray Landis, Jim Drumm, Teresa Ostrich, John Gantz, Rose Ward, Mark Ward, Eleanor Nuffort, Dave Kessler, and Roger Sheaffer.

Kreiders Ice Cream Ride Jun 15
We had a beautiful evening for a ride. The hot, muggy weather finally left. We were surprised more people didn't show up at the ice cream stop. We met Grandma and Grandpa Hurlbut and their 3 little grandsons and we all learned a lot about Thomas the Train. All-in-all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable ride. Riders: Mike Gibson (leader), John Cardos, Jan Solkov, Rich Williams, Susannah Williams, Gary Musser, Dick Richard, Matt Richard, Ethan Richard and Jan Birch.

Galen Hall (A) Jun 18
A great ride into Northern Lancaster County/southern Berk's County. This is the third ride of the Uncle Ron Summer series. Riders: Ron Pfautz (leader), Andy Null, Brian Sowatsky, Rick Lehman, Cindy Davis, John Glick, Mark Buckwalter, Tom Hunt, Scott Wagner, Paul Swarm, Angela Swarm, Barry Lavender, Dale Burkholder, Larry Keating, Neil Fickes, Bret Levy, and Ken Lessans.

Tour of the Amish Country (C) Jun 18
Perfect day for a ride-mid 70's. by accident the ride rode opposite to the Pedal to Preserve. Everyone thought we were going the wrong direction. Most took off at a faster pace. John and I finished with 13 mph pace. Riders: Chris Vachon (leader), Rich Wagner, John Gantz, Teresa Ostrich, Rose Ward, Ron Dillon, Becky Hoyle, Dave Kessler, Michele Moriarity, Chris Moriarity, Jim Wentz, Roger Sheaffer, John Furry, Bill Ressel, Jerry Bryant, Jan Solkov, and Diane Lausman.

New Witness Tree Trek (C) Jun 18 A very nice ride on a beautiful day. Everyone was glad the heat wave ended before the weekend. Riders: Steve Holland (leader), Jim Forster, J.T. Catlett, Eric Kleft (?), John Gantz, Henry Manning, and Tim Barley, Sr.

D Signed for Lunch (D) Jun 18
Light turnout for such a beautiful day-sunny and mid-70's. A good ride at a relaxed pace. Welcome back Sandy! Riders: Steve Holland (leader), Phil Wright, Sandy La Rochelle, and Dottie Sheehy.

CVHS Morgantown (A) Jun 19
We had a great ride! This must have been one of the few "A" rides in which a majority of the riders maintained the posted pace of 17-18 mph. Riders: Brian Mitchell (leader), Barry Lavender, Tom Hunt, Ken Lessons, Dale Burkholder, Mark Buckwalter, Cindy Davis, Tim Ihrig, Jude Sharp, John Donati, Mike Lutz, Diane Lausman.

Butter Side Up (D) Jun 19
Great "D" paced group ride on a cloudy cool (Temp 69) Sunday morning. Beth dropped her chain on the up side of Butter Road just as the "C" group came by. Lew Hershey stopped and assisted her, nice guy! Good thing because our sweep and two other riders went to Hess's for a break and then finished the ride a different route. We were waiting for them on Butter Road and then both Jim's went back looking for them. Nobody could find them and then someone thought they saw them cross Hunsecker Road so off we went and low and behold when we returned to Lancaster Catholic start, there they were waiting for us. Dottie took them another flatter way back. Everyone arrived in one piece with lively conversation of the ride finish. Thanks all for a good ride. Riders: Judy Flowers (leader), David Flowers (sweep,)Jim Payton, Dottie Sheehy, Penny & Jim Kulp, Karen Drawbaugh, Steve Snyder, Cindy Snyder, John Cardos, Judy & Alan Hurlbut, Chip Jordan, and Beth Hendrix

Advanced Picnic Ride (A) Jun 25
A warm and humid (but not oppressive) morning. The A & B group rode the same route and after a few miles of intermingling we ended up with 5 bikes in the lead pack. Neil and Eileen pulled the pack for the majority of the ride at an average of 19 mph. We had to contend with a few missed turns and a bit of cyclo-crossing but no major problems. Dirk Suereth (leader), Marlin Hess, Tom Hunt, Scott Wagner, Eileen Crone, Neil Crone, Tim Ihrig, and Ed Hamme.

Advanced Picnic Ride (B) Jun 25
A beautiful summer morning for a ride and so nice to see so many club members join together. The weather was a bit warm, but there was a slight breeze to help cool us off. Riders: Curtis Palmer (leader), Rich Wagner, Don Whitehead, Randy Haluck, Matt London, Cindy Davis, Craig Shreiner, Tom Rauba, Carl Laus-Landis, and Larry Keating.

Picnic Ride (D) Jun 25
New rider (Judy C.), returning "after 3 years" rider (Elca), year old passenger in her bugger (Bevalee) and LBC regulars rode along on this delightful ride before the club picnic. Group stayed together, stopping once along a creek for a conversational, rest stop. Learned that we had one physical therapist and 3 occupational therapists among us. The picnic was fun and enabled non-riders and riders from all pace categories to share good food and stories. Thanks to Barbara Koppenhafer for coordinating a successful affair. Judy Hurlbut (leader), Tony LaRosa (sweep), Ed Mowery, Connie Simmons, Judy & Bob Colton, Jill MacKenzie, Carol Bowers, Mike, Debi & Bevalee Tshudy, Elca Swigart, and Michael Riggi.

Druck Valley Salley (A) Jun 26

Ride to Manheim (C) Jun 26
Great turnout for a beautiful Sunday morning. Temperature in high nineties with no rain in sight. No crashes, lost riders, one flat tire on Hamaker Road that couldn't wait until the rest stop at Molly's. So as some of us arrived the rest were ready to leave, as some wanted to make the 1:30 ride. Just can't get enough biking in on one day! Thanks everyone for a good ride. Riders: Judy Flowers (leader) Hank Smeltzer ( sweep), Steve Gerber, Harry Campbell, David Flowers, Josh Fisher, Bob Brader, Steve Schmohl, John Gantz, Ray Landis, Michael Hauck, Randy Haluck, Gary Musser, Jeff & Pearl Delong, Joe Knepper, Dave Kessler, Jim Drumm, Teresa Ostrich
